Ryerson’s Legal Innovation Zone Advancing AI Technology for Legal Services with $80,000 in Seed Funding

  Toronto, ON – September 27, 2017 – Last night, the Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ) at Ryerson University, in partnership with the Ministry of the Attorney General (MAG), announced the Ontario AI Legal Challenge, which includes $80,000 in seed funding to advance the use of artificial intelligence in technology solutions for the consumers of legal services. “I believe artificial intelligence has the potential to revolutionize the justice system and simplify difficult processes,” said Attorney General Yasir Naqvi. “I am proud that our government is supporting this great initiative that will open doors for people who would otherwise not have access to justice.” Applications for the Challenge are due Friday November 10 and finalists will be chosen to pitch to a panel of judges the week of November 20 at the LIZ. Building a Brighter Future for Youth Access to Justice

Toronto – September 20, 2017 – The Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ) at Ryerson University, in partnership with The Law Foundation of Ontario and with support from The Ontario Justice Education Network (OJEN) is launching a Youth Access to Justice Initiative this fall. Through a series of 5 sessions that will run from the end of September to the first week of November, the LIZ and their partners will create the building blocks required for a successful youth access to justice initiative. Each session is designed to identify ongoing challenges and potential action areas for systemic and community level improvements. The LIZ and their partners need your help in strengthening youth access to justice by designing approaches that better reach youth, provide answers to important questions and help youth navigate justice issues. Winner of First Ontario Access to Justice Challenge Announced

Legal Innovation Startup Teams Competing for $50,000 in Seed Funding Toronto, ON – July 21, 2016- The Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ) at Ryerson University and Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General announced the six stage one winners in the Ontario Access to Justice Challenge. The Ontario Access to Justice Challenge will help fuel the success of these six innovative Ontario startups that are building products and solutions that challenge the status quo of legal services and enhance access to justice. Ryerson’s Legal Innovation Zone Launches Challenge to Improve Access to Justice

TORONTO – May 10, 2016 – Last night, the Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ) at Ryerson University, with support from Ontario’s Ministry of the Attorney General, announced the launch of the Ontario Access to Justice Challenge, an initiative that will seek to improve access to justice through innovation. Legal Innovation Zone Report Recommends More Affordable, Less Adversarial Approach to Family Law Disputes

For Many Families There is a Better Approach to Resolving Separation Issues March 1, 2016, Toronto, ON — The Legal Innovation Zone (LIZ) at Ryerson University delivered a report to the Ontario Attorney General, the Hon. Madeleine Meilleur with recommendations for a faster, more efficient, more affordable, and less adversarial approach to resolving family law disputes out of court. “Court is not necessary for all families finding their way through the difficult separation process. We were confident that if the community came together, we could help develop a better way for many families to resolve their issues,” said Chris Bentley, Executive Director of the Legal Innovation Zone. “The fact that there was such a consensus around the four key building blocks of screening, education, triage and resolution was reassuring.” The report is the result of extensive community consultations that combined the expertise of many disciplines including domestic violence advocates, mediators, financial advisors, lawyers, mental health professionals, students, and the community at large.
