SmartBail uses machine learning technology to assess whether defendants released on bail will attend their court hearings or commit new criminal offences. It only considers variables that comply with the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms. SmartBail’s mission is to reduce: (1) the pre-trial detention population without affecting the crime rate; and, (2) racial and other bias in the bail system.
Canada needs to drive down its pre-trial detention population. An increasing pre-trial detention population is costing the provincial and territorial governments millions of dollars per year. Our estimates suggest that these governments could reduce their pre-trial detention costs by $50.2 million a year; Ontario alone could reduce it by $17.5 million a year. SmartBail helps realize these savings by reducing the pre-trial detention population without affecting the crime rate.
